Each year, Kiwis donate an average of over $2 billion to charities and community organisations and causes. While businesses and corporates make up a large portion of these donations, at least 50% of this is donated by hardworking people of New Zealand!

The best part? If you've donated to an approved organisation (i.e. approved donee organisations, charities, schools, etc), you're eligible to claim 33.3% of your donation back through a tax credit. WooHoo!

What are the requirements?

A donation of $5 or more
A copy of the receipt
Donated within the last 4 years
Donated to a charity or paid school fees

In order to successfully claim your fair share of your donation back, you'll need to make sure your donations meet the criteria. Each donation must be over $5, you just need to send us a copy of the signed receipt of your donation, and the donation must have been made during the last 4 years.

These include the following:

  • School fees for a public school (state owned school)

    Note: All payments of these types must be clearly labelled as school donations.
  • Donations to a board of trustees of a public school
  • Payments to a parent-teacher association (these payments must be a donation)
  • Payments to other schools that are donee organisations (these payments must be a donation)

Non-Claimable Donations
 Donations less than $5
 Donations without a valid receipt - read more

A valid receipt must contain the following:

  • Your name
  • The amount and date of your donation
  • A clear statement that it is a donation
  • The signature of an authorised person
  • An official stamp with the name of the approved donee organisation or school, and
  • If the receipt is a copy or a replacement, the word "copy" or "replacement" be shown clearly

If you've lost your receipt you can contact the charity or school that you've made a payment to and request a copy.


 Any kind of additional tuition or tertiary education fees
 School fees paid to a privately owned school - read more

School fees paid to a private school are not eligible to be claimed on, however, donations to a private school that's an approved donee organisaions are eligible.


 Donations made through your salary - read more

Donations that are paid by payroll from your salary or wages have the tax credits automatically deducted and are unable to be claimed on.


 Optional school expenses - read more

You cannot claim for the following:

  • Classes with additional expenses (eg. woodwork, metalwork, food education, etc)
  • Activities where attendance is optional
  • Transport to or from a school activity (eg. school camps, educational trips, etc)

How can we help?

If you've made donations or paid for school fees, then you may be eligible to claim back your 33%!

We can process donation claims on your behalf with the IRD. We charge a flat filing fee of $25 per donation filing, per year (this fee is taken directly from the tax credit). Please note: The total tax credit you claim cannot exceed 33.3% of your taxable income for the year. Also, if the receipt for a donation is under two names (eg. a married couple), then 50% of the tax credit will be attributed to each person.

If we are to amend a previously filed donation claim for a tax year we will charge a $25 amendment fee, which may be required to be paid in advance.
