More Changes to Student Loans Announced

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce has announced more changes to student loan and allowance schemes ahead of the May 24th Budget. These changes have received a lot of media attention with opposition MPs confessing outrage while John Key is saying the effect will be `fairly mild'. To help you understand how these changes may affect you, we’ve outlined the key changes below:
- The minimum loan repayment rate will be raised for student loans from 10% to 12%. This will apply to any earnings over $19,084; this change will take affect from 2013.
- Student allowances will only be available for the first four years of study
- The parental income threshold for student allowances will also be frozen for four years
- The repayment incentive scheme, which allows 10% discounts on voluntary repayments, might end in March 2013. It may be a good idea to set up an additional $10 or $15 repayment a week, while you can still benefit from the scheme.
Remember - If you're in New Zealand and earn salary or wages, you need to add "SL" to your tax code from 1 April 2012 regardless of how much you earn, unless you have an exemption. This will ensure you're making the right repayments toward your student loan through your pay. We will keep you updated on these changes to student loans as we expect more details from the Government on 24th May in budget unveiling.
